The biggest surprise for me was that Clap Your HandsSay Yeah and Metric didn’t make anyone’s list and perhaps even more surprising is that Britney Spears (cockney for beer) did.  Also check out the more down to earth (and not so extreemly unknown) top albums of the year from 89.3 the Current [ www.thecurrent.org ].

I remember trying to find out how much gas would be without the government subsidies and found a few recent reports (all consistent with each other) stating that gasoline at the pump for the average automobile in America would cost between $5 and $15.  Why is there such a large margin?  Well, there are a lot of factors that go into the finished product… overseas operations, drilling, containing, infrastructure, shipping, refining, maintenance, etc, etc.  There is also almost always more of a demand for refined oil (or sweet crude oil) than there are refineries.  There are also seasonal setbacks like tropical storms and hurricanes and the annual maintenance of refineries not to mention the threat of anything that could disrupt production like war.  In the end gasoline available to the American consumer costs a lot more than we realize.  So what are we doing?

In recent years there has been a push for alternative fuels to lessen our dependence on foreign oil.  The most notable push for alternative fuel in the automotive industry has been for E85.  What a god send.  We can turn corn into fuel.  Well, true, we can turn maize into fuel but at what cost?  E85 producing plants are actually being shut down because the industry over estimated consumer use.  Which makes you think, do you actually know anyone who drives a vehicle that uses E85?  I personally don’t know anyone who ones such a vehicle let know would know where to find a gas station that provides E85.  Further more E85 vehicles actually have terrible gas mileage.  Its just not financially feasible to purchase an E85 vehicle.  Your better off buying a hybrid which will give you significant MPG difference over a normal vehicle if you are that concerned about the environment.  Even if you pay more up front you will end up paying less in fuel and maintanence in the long run unlike an E85 vehicle or normal vehicle.

Anyway, I’m beginning to stray from the main subject.  Another huge factor in this game is a weak US Dollar.  A slow economy prompted by our failing financial sector (most notably the housing sector) brings forth lower interest rates which signifies concerns over the stability of the US economy which ultimately lowers the value of the US Dollar versus other currencies.  How does this affect the oil industry?  Well, a barrel of oil is priced in US Dollars.  If the dollar is weak producers are getting less for their dollar, the price for oil goes up but the producers are not motivated to produce any additional oil.  Historically speaking the US Economy has gone into recession when oil prices have reached record highs (that is if you adjust historic prices with inflation).  Given the hole the financial sector has dug us into it looks like we could be in for a rough ride.  I honestly don’t remember a time when the US Dollar was weaker than the Canadian Dollar.  If you told me that this was ever happen five years ago I would have laughed in your face.  But now its a reality and a damn shame.  GW Bush’s current mortgage regulations could be too little too late.  Where was he 5 years ago?  And really, there still aren’t enough laws to protect home owners from being taken advantage of.  Adjustable Rate Mortgages should only be available for investors and Interest Only loans should only be available to short term home owners.  And I have yet to hear of any regulatory act which caps fees charged to the homeowner for the transaction of a mortgage.  There’s a long way to go my friends and a weak dollar is just a piece of the pie.  All I have to say is hold tight.

Also, on a side note, look out for China (who has huge investments in Africa) and Russia (if they have a legitimate claim to the Lomonosov Ridge in the Arctic) they could be on the up and up in the oil industry.

Its December and I can’t help but be nostalgic.  As I think back I can’t really think of anything thats happened this year.  That may partially be because I’m an amnesiac (I love that album) but has anything really happened?  That is other than the American economy going to shitte.

Am I just another year older and another year has past?  Minneapolis, Chicago, Seattle, Manchester, London… did that really happen?  Playing shows, recording EPs, broken cars and getting Peased?  I feel like I’ve retained nothing, certainly nothing overwhelming.  Maybe its just me.  I know some of these things mean something to someone but at my current state (which is forever changing like leaves falling from trees that decompose, filter into the ground, become nutrients, get absorbed by the roots of the tree it fell from and blossom from the very branch it fell off) I feel like those things should be right in my back pocket, within arms length but they’re not.  Not today.  Today they are out of reach, slightly removed.  Or perhaps its just me, maybe I’m slightly removed.  I feel like I’ve been everywhere and nowhere… the west side, southwest side, middle east, rich house, dog house, out house, old folks house, house for unwed mothers, halfway homes, catacombs, twilight zones.  Oh wait, that wasn’t me.  But really, what the hell happened?  I suppose its not what happened but whats going to happen.  (Not that this year or any other was terrible or anything like that) Its what I choose to do, what I will to do, what lies ahead of me, what I have to look forward to, what the world holds, what the future holds, what I’m capable of, how I choose to feel, who I choose to be around, when it all happens, today, now, the future.  (Talking about the future in past tense) here it comes.  I suppose its this very mentality that separates me from who I am today and who I was.  It falls in line with what my Uncle Bruce said, “water can flow or it can crash, be water my friend.”

Ah, I love that clip.  That guy kicks ass.  Figuratively and literally.

SP and me went to see Modest Mouse at the Orphium on Monday.  It wasn’t the best MM show I’ve ever seen, in fact it was probably the worst one I’ve ever seen but it wasn’t too shabby either.  I think the best part of the show for me was when Sir Isaac Brock sang into his the pick ups on his guitar.  Other than that it didn’t get too crazy.  Well, other than the countless drinks I had that night.  Oh and when Steve decided to walk right on the their tour bus.  Oh and when we saw Mason Jennings in the lobby.  Oh and when some chick recognized me from elementry school…

I guess it was a crazy night but its hard to top the other two times I saw MM.  I mean Isacc yelled at the American who requested Cowboy Dan at the Mean Fiddler in London (aka Me) and then a couple songs later played a wicked 10 minute version of Cowboy Dan (the second best MM show I’ve ever seen – right after Good News came out).  And the first and best Modest Mouse show I ever saw was after the Moon & Antarctica came out.  I drove down to Chicago with some friends and saw them play at the House of Blues where we caught the second of two shows that night in which Brock was clearly intoxicated trying to swallow the mic in one gulp and forgetting the occasional line or two.  That was by far the best Modest show I’ve ever seen.  Their most recent show just couldn’t live up to such great experiences but was still entertaining.

The Strokes – You Only Live Once

I’ve spent much time contemplating this (mostly at work) and you know its really hard to fairly rank the albums of 2007 especially since I haven’t heard everything.  I mean music is endless and there is so much of it out there.  Nevertheless, here is a list of albums I’ve listened to this year and thought highly enough of to put them on my elite list of albums for 2007.

Albert Hammond Jr – Yours to Keep
How have I never heard of the solo work of Albert Hammond Jr until this year?  With the contributions of this guitarist its clear to see why the Strokes have such catchy rifts and great hooks.  On Albert Hammond’s most recent solo album he seemingly crafts each song with the idea that every instrument should be heard.  This immediately draws your attention to each sound as the song builds until all the instruments play together in harmony.  I listened to this album over and over until I got sick of it and then I listened to it more.

Iron & Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog
This is quite the follow up to Iron & Wine’s last full length album, Our Endless Numbered Days, in 2004 with greater mixing and an unusually high number of track layering for this group.  Despite the conscience musical changes they’ve made its worked out for the better and has given the album more musical depth while not subtracting from the classic Iron & Wine listening experience.

Metric – Grow up and Blow Away
Even though this album was recorded in 1999 and 2001 it wasn’t officially release until this year.  It captures an early Metric with just two members instead of four.  Its got great flow, is easy to listen to and has hip beats and catchy lyrics.

Wilco – Sky Blue Sky
Pitchfork rips this album for its lack of creativity.  I don’t mind because this has turned out to be a great laid back album.  For me some of Wilco’s previous work has been eerie at times but at the same time genius.  But perhaps this album attacts a new group of listeners.  Or maybe it was that commercial one of their songs was on.  Overall this album may have been a slight disappointment for long time Wilco fans but I am pleased with the outcome.

Radiohead – In Rainbows
Just when you think Radiohead has passed the point of no return in incorporating technologically enhanced rhythms and beats into their songs they turn around and throw you a curve ball.  Don’t get me wrong, these fellas still fiddle with electro beats here and there but their new album seems to be heavily focused on the acoustic guitar.  Its like this band is continuously reinventing themselves taking us all along for the ride while retaining the excitement and energy.

The White Stripes – Icky Thump
You’ve got to respect Jack White’s unique guitar playing ability.  He is hands down one of the greatest guitar players of our time.  He’s also not afraid to head in a new direction as can be heard on the White Stripes newest album.  This LP is distinctly different from any other album they have ever made but clearly a logical progression from their last album Get Behind Me Satan.  Although this album can get a little repetitive at times a handful of great songs more than make up for that flaw.  And although Meg’s drum beats may not be flashy, as always, they get the job done and compliment Jack’s talent.

Feist – The Reminder
What can I say?  I guess I’m a sucker for poppy, catchy and not overly driven songs every once in a while.  This year Feist came out of left field, caught me by surprise and won me over.  This album has a great tempo and makes you want to either light a candle or tap your feet when you listen to it.

The Cobbs – The Deathcapades
This is my sleeper pick this year.  This east coast band has a great title track that sets a mellow and chilly yet comfortable mood.  However after the first track the band hits you hard with subtle retro rock and that sounds Wilco and Zeppelin influenced and sometimes they even sound like the Beatles (after they stopped touring but before their “experimental” days).  Its not a flawless album but you won’t be skipping around on the track list too often either.

The Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
This band made the difficult transformation of being musically introverted to focusing their songs and lyrics outward on this dark sophomore album.  Although this album was a slight disappointment for me from their first album there are still a few songs you want to turn the volume up and rock out to.  Despite its short comings this album is a bold and perhaps groundbreaking endeavour.

The New Pornographers – Challengers
The album is less ambitious than previous albums and has the feeling that they wanted to play it safe this time around.  The decision to allow a more vocals from one of their female band members has emerged as one of this album’s strengths but it is clear that AC Newman still has the largest influence on the band’s musical direction.

It was time for me to upgrade to a more modern and simple form of blogging and here it is.  The old, time consuming, cumbersome geocities site has now been retired.  The only benefit it offered in theory was its graphics.  But I look forward to discovering the capabilites of this website and what it has to offer.  Hello.
